Fires Damage Businesses in Sayville, Sysosset

Two separate fires Sunday morning damaged a half dozen businesses in Sayville
and Syosset, fire officials said, but left no injuries.
The first fire, which was spotted by a Nassau police officer around 3 a.m.,
broke out in the parking lot of Legend Nissan on 268 Jericho Turnpike in
Syosset. Thirty fire fighters from the Syosset Fire Department extinguished the
fire in about an hour and a half, said Asst. Chief John Capobianco, but not
before the flames engulfed 19 new vehicles.
Fourteen of the vehicles, which consisted mostly of Altimas, were totalled in
the fire, he said. The others received minor heat damage. The cost of the
damage is unknown, he said. Capobianco said the cause of the fire is being
investigated by the Nassau County Fire Marshall's office.
In Sayville, a fire erupted in the kitchen of Sayville Pizza at 60 Main Street
around 11 a.m., fire officials said. Over 120 firefighters from six departments
responded to the blaze, said Chief Vincent Fattarusso, and were able to contain
it within a half hour. It took more than an hour and a half to put it
completely under control, he said.
The fire was contained to the pizzeria, but four other businesses in the strip
mall suffered heavy smoke and water damage, Fattarusso said. Part of the
building collapsed, he said, but the extent of the damage has yet to be
determined. Suffolk County police will continue to investigate the fire, he
said, but are leaning toward an accidental cause.
A manager of George's TV and Appliances, which is located next door the
Sayville Pizza, said it was too early to assess the damage to the business,
which has been there since 1955.
"It's real hard to say," said the man who did not want to be identified.
"There's a lot of water in here and smoke damage, and there's a hole in the
roof."
