I had the pleasure to see this band opening for DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE in Cologne last week. THE BETHS really have great potential. I bought the debut album - one of the best debut albums of the last 10 years, incredible catchy and dense. I hope that they will receive the success they deserve.

The Beths
"Future Me Hates Me"
I never wanted to, I didn't want to fall
I don't believe that love's a good idea at all
Oh this well designed world
Everyone that I know is broken
And has fell for it before
And sometimes
I think I'm doing fine
I think I'm pretty smart
I'm quite convinced that I
Can keep myself up high
Oh then the walls become thin
And somebody gets in, everything's less
But it won't happen again
It probably won't happen again
But there's something about you
There's something about you
There's something about you
I wanna risk going through
Future heart break, future headaches
Wide eyed nights late lying awake
With future cold shakes from stupid mistakes
Future me hates me for, hates me for
It's getting dangerous
I could get hurt I know
I've counted up the cons
They far outweigh the pros
Oh and if word gets you down
It's a mob or a sound, I am drowning
It's too late for me now
I need you sticking around
Cause there's something about you
There's something about you
There's something about you
I wanna risk going through
Future heart break, future headaches
Wide eyed nights late lying awake
With future cold shakes from stupid mistakes
Future me hates me for, hates me for
Future heart break, future headaches
Wide eyed nights late lying awake
With future cold shakes from stupid mistakes
Future me hates me for, hates me for
Future heart break, future headaches
Wide eyed nights late lying awake
With future cold shakes from stupid mistakes
Future me hates me for, hates me for
Future heart break, future headaches
Wide eyed nights late lying awake
With future cold shakes from stupid mistakes
Future me hates me for, hates me for
Future heart break
Future cold shakes

So I guess we are all gonna sit here and pretend they didn't just nail the "ba ba ba ba ba" Beach Boys style harmony? This Band is refreshing and fun.

Crazy, I finally searched this song on YouTube after months of listening to it on Spotify expecting 10 mil views, to find only 311k! It deserves way more as it's a classic hit. Just wanted to say I love the singer's NZ idiomatic vocal mannerisms such as when she says "future heedaches" and "i'm defeeenseless".

Love this song, which I found through my Spotify Discover playlist. After my third or fourth listen, I thought to myself that I was listening to the musical successor to Rilo Kiley, who I miss dearly. Was not surprised to then find that the Beths' lead singer idolizes Jenny Lewis and credits a Rilo Kiley album as the most influential album in her life. Looking forward to listening to the rest of the album.

The more I listen to this record, the more I'm convinced that it's one of the all-time great power pop debuts. Five of the songs are flat-out, fall down brilliant pop masterpieces and the other five are merely really really forking good. This is up there with the first Fountains of Wayne record in terms of instant mood enhancement.

@HaxorSerialKiller I put Great No One, Future Me, Whatever, & Happy Unhappy in the brilliant, little-hairs-stood-at-attention category with the fifth slot occupied by a rotation of the other six songs on the record. That lost spot is currently inhabited by Not Running, which rocks deliciously hard for a bunch of affable jazz students from NZ. I think what makes this album so special is you can make a convincing "best song" argument for any of them.

@MuikuliWander Yeah, from what I've heard of the new one (roughly half the songs) it does sound gentler in sonic approach. I read somewhere that Liz and Jonathan are a couple now. Perhaps that accounts for the recent softer edges!

The Beths
"Happy Unhappy"
I was higher than a biplane
Then you hit me like a hurricane
I bailed out, hit the ground
Washed up in a storm drain
Stumbled up the driveway
With a handshake and a slow wave
Now I'm crashed out on the couch
Wondering if you feel the same
'Cause you're in my brain taking up space I need
For remembering pins and to take out the bins
And that one particular film that that actor was in
I see your face superimposed over everything
It ain't right
'Cause I was fine on my own
Tolling steady like a dial tone
Couldn’t you leave me?
I was happy unhappy
But now I'm overthrown
Wish my heart were really made of stone
And I could forget you
Like I really want to
I was living with your spare change
In the pocket of your cutaways
And I get so spent
Waiting on your lunch break
Broke every window pane
So I can feel the cold rain
When I lie in bed catching death
Trying to wash it all away
'Cause you're in my brain taking up space I need
For delivering lies and suppressing the sighs
And for navigating escape when I get lost in your eyes
It's taking up all of my time just to keep it in line
It ain't right
'Cause I was fine on my own
Tolling steady like a dial tone
Couldn’t you leave me?
I was happy unhappy
But now I'm overthrown
Wish my heart were really made of stone
And I could forget you
Like I really want to
I was fine on my own
Tolling steady like a dial tone
Couldn’t you leave me?
I was happy unhappy
But now I'm overthrown
Wish my heart were really made of stone
And I could forget you
Like I really want to
I could forget you
I could forget you
I could forget you

http://youtu.be/jrVbawRPO7I
Live performance at tv show Shindig! , aired on US tv: 11 August 1965
Songwriters: Eleanor Louise "Ellie" Greenwich (✝ 68 yrs - Brooklyn, 23 October 1940 - New York, 26 August 2009) and Jeff Barry (born Joel Adelberg; New Nork, April 3, 1938)
Lead singer: Veronica Bennett (later known as Ronnie Spector) Born: August 10, 1943, New York City. Backing vocals: Ronnie Spector-Bennett, Nedra Talley, born January 27, 1946 in New York City, Estelle Bennett born: July 22, 1941, New York City - († Feb. 11, 2009, Englewood - New Jersey)
Supporting backing vocals: Ellie Greenwich (✝26 Aug. 2009) , Nino Tempo, Bobby Sheen (✝), Sonny Bono (✝) , Cher, Darlene Love, Fanita James, and Gracia May-Nitzsche
Band: The Wrecking Crew with Hal Blaine on drums with his famous intro. That famous drum intro was an accident. Hal Blaine said: "I was supposed to play the snare on the second beat as well as the fourth, but I dropped a stick. Being the faker I was in those days, I left the mistake in and it became: “Bum-ba-bum-BOOM!” And soon everyone wanted that beat.
No less an authority than Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys has declared 'Be My Baby' the greatest pop record ever made. The song drove Brian Wilson mad with envy.
Wilson says it is his favorite record, stating in Q Magazine's 1001 Best songs Ever: "This is a special one for me. What a great sound, the Wall of Sound. Boy, first heard this on the car radio and I had to pull off the road, I couldn't believe it. The choruses blew me away; the strings are the melody of love. It has the promise to make the world better."
The Ronettes recorded "Be My Baby" in July 1963, Los Angeles at the Gold Star Studios famous for its echo chamber and was released in August 1963 at Philles Records. Producer: the infamous Phill Spector.
By the fall of that year, it had become a top ten hit, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard Top 100. "Our lives were turned upside down," Ronnie later recalled. "All the things I'd ever dreamed about were finally coming true "Be My Baby" turned out to be a huge record for the Ronettes; radio stations constantly played the song throughout the fall of 1963. Their unpolished but flirty voices, and Ronnie’s breaking “whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh” in “Be My Baby,” have echoed through generations of female rock singers.
"Be My Baby" inspired a legion of Ronettes fans, including Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, who wrote "Don't Worry Baby" as a tribute to the group. The song is also notable for being the first recording work done by Cher, who was one of the backing vocals on the song. Cher, the girlfriend of Sonny Bono at the time (who was then working for Phil Spector) was asked to join the back-up singers when one of them didn't show up for the recording that day. " 'Be My Baby' was the first record I ever sang on," Cher later wrote. "...I went out and stood in front of this big speaker and sang 'be my, be my baby' with the Ronettes and all these other singers."Ah huh huh", and "Be My Baby!," Cher became a permanent backup singer for songs recorded by the Ronettes, along with other songs Phil Spector produced for his label Philles Records.
Phil Spector (81 yrs, born Harvey Phillip Spector, December 26, 1939 - January 16, 2021) convicted on April 13, 2009, for the second-degree murder of Lana Clarkson — a blond actress who was found shot to death in the legendary producer’s 30-room mansion. It was a tragic end to a music career that saw as many dizzying heights as it did truly bizarre twists. He was serving a prison sentence of 19 years to life and would be 88 years (in 2027) old before becoming eligible for parole. But Spector died January 16th , 2021of covid19 related complications.

Kirsty MacColl wrote such beautifully-crafted songs about young love; I believe she was only seventeen when she wrote They Don't Know. The musicianship here is absolutely first rate, the vocal harmonies are sheer perfection (it's lovely to hear Kirsty's voice so prominent amongst the backing vocals). I could listen to this song all day long, but it's SO perfect that it makes me cry every time I play it - makes me wish I was that young all over again - when everything was fresh and exciting. THAT is the true power of a really great song/songwriter. Rest in peace, beautiful lady.
