Strip club, bearing new name, survives

There's a new strip club in Stone Park.
Mayor Beniamino Mazzulla campaigned two years against strip clubs
and adult bookstores, saying they gave the village a bad reputation.
But Mazzulla said there was no way to prevent Scores Chicago from
opening at the former Dreamer's Gentleman's Club site at Lake Street
and Mannheim Road. He noted the club just changed names; it did not
change ownership.
In an attempt to limit the number of adult entertainment outlets in
Stone Park, Mazzulla and his board rezoned the village.
Only the Scores property, along with the Noa Noa Nightclub, just east
of Scores, are zoned for entertainment, Mazzulla said.
Once their properties change owners, the sites must comply with an
increase in required parking, effectively prohibiting similar uses
from returning, Mazzulla said.
Since Dreamer's wasn't sold, Scores couldn't be held to the new
zoning, he noted.
"You can't stop someone from changing the name from one to the
other, which was basically what they did," Mazzulla said. "Legally,
anyone can change the name of their business. No new licenses were
given out."
The present owner was grandfathered in by the new zoning ordinance.
"But once this place closes down, that's it," Mazzulla said.
The disdain he showed for adult entertainment in the 2001 election
still holds true, he added.
"I don't support those kinds of businesses, but everyone has a First
Amendment right," Mazzulla said.
Dreamer's closed its doors this summer for renovations. Scores opened
Sept. 11.
Scores, which owns two sites in New York, is frequently mentioned by
Howard Stern on his radio program.

Stern, who has made public appearances at the Manhattan Scores,
wouldn't even be enough to lure Mazzulla into the Stone Park club.
"You'll never catch me in there," Mazzulla said. "Even if he would
show up, I wouldn't go and see him."
